What if practicing public speaking while anxious is reinforcing the very fear you're trying to overcome?

Key Ideas From the Talk

1. Practice Doesn't Make Perfect. It Makes Permanent.

Practice can help you prepare, but repetition alone doesn't necessarily create confidence. If every speaking experience is filled with anxiety, you may not be practicing speaking with confidence. You may be practicing speaking with anxiety.

2. Public Speaking Anxiety Is Your Brain Protecting You, Not Proof That You Can't Speak.

Fear is your brain's way of trying to protect you from something it perceives as a threat. That's why even accomplished, well-prepared professionals can experience racing hearts, shaking hands, or blank minds when all eyes turn toward them.

3. Every Anxious Speaking Experience Can Reinforce the Pattern.

When public speaking continues to feel threatening, repeatedly pushing through the fear doesn't necessarily teach your brain that speaking is safe. It can reinforce the association between being in the spotlight and feeling anxious.

4. Public Speaking Isn't a Performance. It's a Conversation.

When speaking becomes a performance, the speaker becomes the performer and the audience becomes the judge. Shift the goal from impressing people to connecting with them, and the experience begins to change.

5. A Presentation Is Simply Being Present.

Present with your words. Present with the room. Present with the people who are there to listen. When your attention moves away from monitoring yourself and toward connecting with others, practice stops being about performing and starts becoming practice in genuine human connection.
